8th Graders Wade into Chagrin River to Assess Water Quality

Eighth grade students participated in an integrated math/science project earlier this week, traveling to the Old River Farm Park shelter in the North Chagrin Metropark Reservation after studying watersheds in their classrooms.

As part of their assessment, students took physical, chemical and biological measurements on the river water, using nets to sample the macroinvertebrate population and other instruments to measure additional parameters from temperature to phosphate content. Teacher Chris Harrow also helped students measure the river's speed and cross section in order to assess the volume of water moving through the watershed.

The data collected by the students will be entered online in the Sierra Club Water Monitoring Program, which encourages citizen scientists to help monitor the quality of water in our rivers and streams.
