Writing Center

The Lucier Family Writing Center was established to provide a place where students can enhance their writing skills and nurture their interest in various forms of writing. Staffed by student interns, who are selected for their ability to comprehend texts, express themselves eloquently, and understand what it means and what it takes to be a good writer, the Center support all aspects of writing from thesis development to creative writing. The Writing Center also offers a senior thesis course for students who really want to push themselves toward completion of a major writing sample, whether a research paper, novel, collection of short stories, or personal essay.

The Writing Center, made possible by a generous lead gift from Jeff and Susan Lucier, was established in 2007. Newly situated adjacent to the Learning Commons, it is a significant feature of Stirn Hall’s Learning Support Center. With its natural light and more expansive and functional space, the Center will provide an inspirational environment for students to engage in the writing process.

“The great thing about the Writing Center is that it is not a place; rather it is an entire program, built to connect students in a sort of interdependence. Younger students, mainly freshmen and sophomores, rely on Writing Center interns for insightful aid into writing of all kinds, from sonnet structure to major analytical essays. Interns, perhaps more subtly, rely on younger students for valuable experience, especially in the fields of leadership and teaching. There’s also the implicit benefits to the job, like the look of pride on a younger student’s face when they tell you that they made the grade on a paper you critiqued, or the moment when a struggling student who’s averse to your help finally relents, meaning you have successfully convinced another person of the Writing Center’s magic.”
