Hawken School is a proud member of the Global Online Academy, a not-for-profit consortium of elite, international independent schools with a mission to develop 21st century skills by replicating, in shared online classrooms, the intellectually rigorous programs and excellent teaching that are the hallmarks of its member schools.
Hawken’s partnership with the Global Online Academy allows students to explore the entire world from their own home. Students who elect to take an additional course through GOA have options that far extend the typical high school curriculum – courses such as biochemistry, Arabic and computer programming. As an added benefit, the online format exposes students to peers from different cultures and backgrounds. Classes taken at GOA are recognized as credit-bearing courses and appear on student transcripts.
Global Online Academy was founded when Lakeside School of Seattle invited 15 peer schools for a three-day conference to discuss aspects of online learning and the enhanced range of learning possibilities that a peer partnership could provide to students and educators. The founding schools included Cranbrook Schools of Bloomfield Hills, Michigan; The Dalton School, NY, NY; King’s Academy, Madaba-Manja, Jordan; Sidwell Friends School, Washington, DC; Albuquerque Academy, Albuquerque, New Mexico; Catlin Gabel School, Portland, Oregon; Germantown Friends School, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania; Head-Royce School, Oakland, California; Lakeside School, Seattle, Washington; and Punahou School, Honolulu, Hawaii.
Hawken is one of only two schools in Ohio to hold membership in the Global Online Academy. The consortium now includes more than 85 signature independent schools recognized for their academic excellence. Along with the before-noted founding schools, consortium membership includes the International School of Beijing, Shunji, Beijing, China; Latin School of Chicago, Chicago, Illinois; Jakarta International School, Jakarta, Indonesia; The Blake School, Hopkins, Minnesota; Greenhill School, Dallas, Texas; Isidore Newman School, New Orleans, Louisiana; Noble and Greenough, Dedham, Massachusetts; and The Westminster Schools, Atlanta, Georgia.
