Fifth Grade Entrepreneurs Showcase Handmade Products

The Sherwin Commons at Lyndhurst was abuzz this morning as fifth graders peddled their wares - the outcome of a newly designed unit of study in entrepreneurship.

Throughout the first semester, guest speakers and visits to local nonprofit organizations and businesses helped students to understand why people start businesses, what it takes to run a business, how people finance a company, how businesses determine the right person for a job, and much more.

Students then applied what they learned to their own start-ups, which were based on teacher-assigned groupings. Collaborating in their groups, they decided on a product and a business name before making their pitches to Head of School Scott Looney and Chief Financial Officer Donna Pacchioni.

The student businesses created stress balls, Ohio sport-themed t-shirts, silly putty, gummies, muffins/cookies, dog treats, holiday ornaments, and holiday soaps. All profits earned from sales to the Lower and Middle School students will be donated to the fifth grade service project: replacing statues and improving the landscape architecture of the American Garden in the Cleveland Cultural Gardens.
