Debaters Shine at Local and National Tournaments; Shurtz Receives Golden Apple Awar

Fourteen members of Hawken’s Speech & Debate Team traveled to  Minneapolis this past weekend to compete at the Minneapple Debate Tournament hosted by Apple Valley High School. 
 
The Hawks put on quite a show and came home with a 2nd Place Team Sweepstakes Award – a first for Hawken!

In Public Forum:
Seniors Ozan Ergungor and Ammar Lone were named Semifinalists
Senior Josef Horwath and junior Brian Sun were named Quarterfinalists
In Congressional Debate:
Senior Nayan Rao placed 5th
Junior Andre Griffin advanced to Finals

In a very exciting moment for Hawken, head Coach Bob Shurtz was recognized by the Apple Valley Speech & Debate Team for his many years of service to the activity and his students and was honored with the Golden Apple Award.

While 14 Hawks were in Minneapolis, the rest of the team was competing at the Laurel Tournament, and they soared!

In Policy Debate:
Michael Lee and Amrita Mukunda placed 3rd
Kevin Yu and Carolyn Tung placed 5th

In Congressional Debate
Samia Menon placed 2nd
Kira Gundy placed 6th

In Humorus Interp:
Jared Shapiro placed 1st

In International Interp:
Sam Li Placed 3rd

In U.S. Extemp:
Brandon Lo placed 6th
