Middle School Kicks Off Service Learning Program

The Middle School kicked of its Service Learning program last week with a series of presentations focusing on their goals for the year.

A highlight of the morning was a visit from Erin Huber of Drink Local Drink Tap, who spoke to students and faculty about her organization’s efforts to clean up waterfronts in Cleveland and provide safe, reliable drinking water sources to villages in Uganda. Agnes Akite, a previous resident of one of the Ugandan villages, also shared how access to water changed the course of her adult life and livelihood. She emphasized how even the small things we do can lead to vital changes in the global community.  “The world can make a difference," Agnes concluded, "And the world is right here in this room.”

After the presentations in the Chapel, 7th and 8th grade students spent the remainder of the day working with a variety of partners in Northeast Ohio, focusing on the day's service theme: teamwork and collaboration. 6th graders wrapped up their “Choosing to Participate” unit by sharing a lunch purchased on a minimum wage budget and by engaging in reflecting on their experiences.
