Sherwick Fund Makes $1 Million Legacy Commitment to Hawken’s Centennial Campaign
A legacy gift from the Sherwick Fund, a supporting organization of the Cleveland Foundation, is a game-changer as Hawken proceeds with fundraising to complete the construction of Stirn Hall, the new $25 million academic building on the Upper School campus.
Sherwick Fund board members Jack and Clara Sherwin of Lake County have a long history with Hawken School. Jack is a 1953 graduate from the School and their two sons attended as well. Jack is a former President of Hawken’s Board of Trustees and was elected a Life Trustee in 1993.
Head of School D. Scott Looney notes, “Jack and Clara Sherwin have been involved in every campaign this School has coordinated. We are truly grateful, once again, for their significant generosity during our Centennial as we complete our major building project on our Gates Mills campus.”
Hawken Board Chair Charles P. Cooley adds that the Hawken board has enthusiastically endorsed the building campaign from the get-go. “This legacy gift from the Sherwick Fund, which was driven by Jack & Clara’s devotion to the school, is a game changer as we are now close to fully funding the new building. To honor the Sherwins, we are naming a commons area on our Lyndhurst campus “The Jack ’53& Clara Sherwin Commons,” as this is the campus Jack and his sons grew up on while students here.”
The largest capital project in the history of Hawken School, Stirn Hall encompasses 106,000 square feet of building space and includes a state-of-the-art science wing, a fabrication lab, and a Learning Commons.
