Community Commemorates 100th Anniversary at Centennial Weekend

Parents, faculty, staff, friends and the largest gathering of alumni ever to assemble at one time came together to commemorate Hawken School's 100th anniversary during a series of inspiring events held May 15-17.

On Friday, the Class of 1965 celebrated their 50th reunion; approximately 150 Old Guard Alumni gathered to dedicate the Chapel in honor of the School's first five headmasters; more than 350 attended the Four School Cocktail Party in Hurwitz Hall; and 43 reunion parties representing different class years were held across Cleveland. It was a busy day that extended well into the evening.

Saturday began with the Headmaster Panel featuring Head of School D. Scott Looney and 3 previous heads of school -- Jim Berkman, Doug Stenberg, and Jim Young. The lively and informative discussion, moderated by Dr. Todd Horn '73, can be watched here. The day continued as guests enjoyed campus tours, the Gallery 100 art exhibit, a faculty fair highlighting Hawken's innovative programming; a hands-on session on the outdoor leadership course, and a community picnic attended by more than 400.

On Saturday evening, 1800 graduates, parents, faculty, staff and friends came together at the Cleveland Convention Center. The occasion provided a wonderful opportunity to reconnect, remember, and celebrate, even as the community grieved the loss of seniors Alex Doody and Josh Weil, who were paid loving tribute during the evening presentation. Centennial weekend wrapped up on Sunday at the Sally & Bob Gries Center for Experiential and Service Learning open house in University Circle.

The weekend was an amazing gathering of people and events, an affirmation of the strength of the Hawken community, and a powerful celebration of a remarkable place that is worth coming home to.

We thank all who participated and invite those who were not able to attend to view a video of weekend highlights.
