Investments Place 6th Graders 3rd in State

During the course of an after school investment club, the 6th grade team of Jack Ritz, Henry Michaelson and Collin Witt built a portfolio that increased by an amazing 18%, placing them 3rd amongst 655 middle and high school teams competing in the Ohio Stock Market Challenge.

This year, 24 students attended 10-week sessions led by Mr. Joseph Brooks to learn how to invest an imaginary $100,000 in various companies by either purchasing or shorting shares of stock.

For the past eight years, Mr. Joseph Brooks has assisted teams of 6th grade students as they navigated through finance web sites to research stock trends and compete in the Ohio Stock Market Challenge.

The statewide competition, sponsored by the Ohio Center of Economic Education at Ashland University, has had a long history helping students learn the basics of financial investment.

During the contest, the team of Henry Michaelson, Jack Ritz, and Collin Witt enthusiastically followed their earnings and built a portfolio value that increased by an amazing 18% in just a short time. Among the 655 teams throughout Ohio, including high school students, these three 6th graders placed third overall and second in the Elementary/Middle School division! They will receive a cash prize and an invitation to help coach next year’s teams to victory!

Congratulations Henry, Jack, and Collin!
