7th Graders Design Memorials for National Mall

In preparation for their Doorways trip to Washington, DC next week, 7th grade students proposed and designed memorials for the National Mall.

Charged with choosing a person or event from United States history, evaluating funding, telling a story, choosing a location and designing the actual structure, the student projects integrated elements of science, math and humanities.

The assignment also utilized student choice, collaborative teamwork, research, a Google Earth tour of their site, designing with Sketch-Up, and presentation skills. Students also researched the requirements to earn LEED Platinum status for building a monument with minimal environmental impacts.

The project culminated with team presentations at the Gries Center, and prepared students with meaningful lenses with which to view Washington, DC's spectacular monuments.
