Two Students Earn National Spanish Awards

Emily Hedlund '15 and Seysha Mehta '17 have earned scholarships for their achievements on the National Spanish Examination and for their excellent skills in the Spanish language.

Emily Hedlund, a junior, has won the 2014 Junior Travel Award for her achievement on the National Spanish Examination and for her excellent skills in the Spanish language.

Kevin Cessna-Buscemi, Director of the National Spanish Examinations, said: “This national award is quite prestigious for Hawken School. It is valued at over $3,000, and is only awarded to 16 students from across the United States from among the 160,000 students who take the exam each year. Students become eligible by earning high scores on the National Spanish Examination and then submitting samples of their written and oral work in Spanish to a selection committee appointed by the American Association of Teachers of Spanish and Portuguese.” In July, Emily will be traveling to Spain with the other 15 winners.

Ninth grader Seysha Mehta won the 2014 Global Citizen Scholarship Award, valued at $2,000. The award is given each year to 16 students from across the United States. In July, Seysha will travel with the group of 16 winners to study at the Concordia Language Villages in Bemidji, MN.

Hawken School has a long history of excellence in academics and has participated in the National Spanish Examination for the last four years.

Congratulations to Emily Seysha and their proud Spanish instructors Gwynne Gretter, Rachel Mullen and Richard Tate.
