Seniors Tim Perevozchikov and Zach Kirsch emerged as Public Forum tournament champions at the prestigious 28th annual Stanford Invitational Speech & Debate Tournament held February 8-10 at Stanford University, in Palo Alto, California.
Prior to the competition, the nine debaters from Hawken who were participating in the Stanford tournament were joined by San Francisco area alumni for a fun evening on Fisherman’s Wharf. With support from past Speech and Debaters, students had an opportunity to practice their public forum routines addressing the month’s topic: Resolved: The Supreme Court rightly decided that Section 4 of the Voting Rights Act violated the Constitution.
The support certainly helped, as in addition to the championship win, three other Hawken debate teams advanced to the highly competitive elimination rounds: Devesh Modi ’16 and James Swingos ‘16 made it to triple octas; Max Schachere '15 and Aman Nair ’15 advanced to double octas; and Olivia Fried '15 and Emily Hedlund ‘15 made it to the octa final round. As a result, Fried and Hedlund received a bid to the Tournament of Champions.
Tim and Zach went into the elimination rounds as the #1 ranked seed out of the 158 competing teams. Undefeated in eleven rounds of the competition, they won the final round by a 5-0 decision. This is the third consecutive year Tim Perevozchikov has won at the Stanford tournament, each one has been with a different partner. This year at the tournament he also received a third place speaker award out of the 316 debaters in varsity public forum.
The Stanford championship followed Tim and Zach’s Public Forum December championships at the Edie Holiday Tournament in Minneapolis (Round Robin) and the Glen Oak tournament in Canton.
In November, Tim paired with Aric Floyd of ‘14, and earned semifinalist recognition at the Glenbrooks Speech and Debate Tournament in Chicago, Illinois.
In January, Tim paired with Ron Lubarsky ‘14, and the team emerged as champions Public Forum at the Laird Lewis tournament in Charlotte, North Carolina, and the Sylvania High School invitational in Sylvania, Ohio.
Zach Kirsch paired up with Ron Lubarsky ‘14, earning the team runner-up recognition at the Minneapple Tournament in Minneapolis this November. Zach also earned the competition’s first place speaker award.
