Student and Diabetic Alert Dog Make Headlines

Elijah Spiro '14 and his diabetic alert dog, Nova, made headlines recently and also appeared on Fox 8 News.
End of January, the pair took part in a weekend-long workshop aimed at diabetics, their family members, educators and medical professionals.

Elijah's mother, Gail, made learning about diabetes her obsession and found out about diabetic alert dogs almost by accident.  “Suddenly a light came into our life when we found out there was such a thing as a diabetic alert dog,” Gail said in an interview for the News-Herald.  She organized the weekend of workshops that was attended by people from throughout the Midwest.

More than a welcome addition to Hawken's Upper School campus, Nova is a huge help to Elijah, who is a swimmer on Hawken's boys swim team. Read more about Elijah and Nova in an article from the Cleveland Jewish News and watch an interview that aired on News Channel 5 at Noon.
