Intensives: Creative Non-Fiction

"Here and Now," introduces students to the genre of creative non-fiction. Based at the Gries Center, students go out into the community in search of the particulars that make for great non-fiction writing, and the experiences that let them write authenticially about their subjects.
The Upper School Intensive also familiarizes students with literary essays, memoirs, and classic and contemporary journalism, focusing on writers who wrestle their material from the world. Readings vary widely as the class explores how writers use their experiences and observations to make artful commentary.

The class includes daily submissions of short non-fiction essays for peer review in an open workshop. Students also work toward a major independent project, a non-fiction exploration of an issue, organization, site, or person in the University Circle area.
