Hawken Middle School received a “Promising Practices” award from the Character Education Partnership and has been asked to present a paper on character education in Oxford this January.

Every year the Character Education Partnership, a national “coalition of organizations and individuals committed to fostering effective character education,” recognizes U.S. schools and educators who have “implemented unique, specific, and effective character education strategies” in their school communities.

Hawken Middle School received a “Promising Practices” award from the CEP for Chapel Grapple: Exploring Core Values Through Film. This eight week advisory-based character education program calls students to discuss and reflect on Hawken’s core values through the medium of film. Since the piloting of this program in 2012, it has expanded to include a Facing History-inspired theme and a global middle school partnership. The student life team at Hawken Middle School works purposefully and thoughtfully to reflect upon and enhance this critical work around character.

On the heels of the CEP award, Hawken's Middle School student life team has also been accepted to publish and present a paper entitled "Using Culture as a Teaching Tool for Character Education," at Oxford University in January. The conference is supported by the Jubliee Center at Birmingham University, one of the largest centers for research on character education in the world. While in the UK, Middle School Co-Director Jen Halliday and 8th Grade Student Life Coordinator Megan Saxelby will have the opportunity to meet with Hawken's international school partner to expand work on Chapel Grapple, and tour the Jubliee Center itself, meeting with key educators and researchers from all over the world.

By expanding their body of knowledge through the latest research on character education, the Middle School student life team will ensure that Hawken's mission of attending to both the character and intellect of students remains forward-focused and central to all that the School does.
