Students Excel at BioInnovation Academy
Anthony Charles, Jonathan Simmons, and Jasmine Walker, all members of the Class of 2016, were selected to participate in the inaugural BioInnovation Academy this past summer.
The Austen BioInnovation Institute in Akron (ABIA) sponsors the program, which fosters an interest in science, medicine and entrepreneurship. Approximately 30 students in Northeast Ohio were chosen to join the summer academy, where they observed various clinical scenarios through ABIA's Center for Simulation and Integrated Health Education with the goal of identifying patient-centered problems.

They worked in groups to solve a problem in two separate tracks – devices and community health. The students presented their solution and prototypes to a panel of judges that included educators, business leaders, industry experts and community officials.
Jasmine participated in the June session, where her team’s project resulted in a Box simulator to teach CPR without an instructor. Jonathan and Anthony both participated in the July session. Each of their teams won top awards for the devices they designed with 3D CAD Software. Jonathan’s team won the "best device collaboration" award for creating a model for a battery-capacitor hybrid to use with an AED unit. Anthony’s team won the award for "best overall presentation" for designing a universal AED pad that could be used for both adults and children.
At the end of the program, students were equipped with real-world knowledge, focusing on innovation and biomedicine.
