Recent Graduate Published in World Journal

An article by Sydney Costantini '13 was published in the July 2013 issue of the World Journal for Pediatric and Congential Heart Surgery.
Based on her summer 2012 STEMM research project, Sydney is credited as the first author in the article "Staphylococcus aureus Colonization in Children Undergoing Heart Surgery."

Sydney's project was an epidemiological study that reviewed pediatric patients who had undergone cardiac surgery at the Cleveland Clinic to determine whether swab testing via one or two locations was most useful in identifying MRSA-positive patients. Sydney worked independently, but was guided by research mentor Dr. Charles Foster, who works in Pediatric Infectious Diseases at the Cleveland Clinic.

"The idea of having a published paper is really cool," said Sydney, who is currently attending Yale.  "My research no longer seems like another school science project, but something that matters in the real world."
