Hawken Graduate Wins Landmark Case

Hawken graduate Roberta Kaplan ’84 is the attorney responsible for winning the recent landmark case in which the U.S. Supreme Court determined the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA) to be unconstitutional.
Kaplan, who lives in New York City was the lead counsel for Edith Windsor in the case United States v. Windsor. She is a partner with the Manhattan law firm Paul, Weiss, Rifkind, Wharton & Garrison.

An article in The New York Daily News notes that Kaplan devoted four years and countless hours to bringing down the Defense of Marriage Act. “Obviously, it has consequences for thousands and thousands of people, and I’m one of those people it has consequences for,” Kaplan, 46, told the Daily News. But during the long battle, Kaplan was deliberate in keeping her focus on her client.

“The case was never about me," she is quoted as saying in an article by the Cleveland Jewish News. "It was always about our client, Edith Windsor, and from day one, we really believed that she had an incredibly strong story to tell and that the story of her life would help persuade the Supreme Court to rule the way they did.”

Kaplan was cited as a "Legal Titan" an article by the Huffington Post, which stated "We owe these great Americans - and many other allies - our respect and admiration for their commitment to a more just and equal America."
