Hawken Rowers Win Midwest Championship

Seniors Ben and Gabe Whitehead won first place in an exciting race last weekend at the 2013 Midwest Scholastic Rowing Championship at Lake Dillon, near Zanesville, OH.
Rowing in the men's lightweight Double Scull class, Ben and Gabe won their 1500-meter semifinal on Saturday and advanced to the Sunday finals. Rowing in a field of six boats, Hawken and North Allegheny pulled away to make it a two-boat race. Hawken slowly built a one second lead and held this going into the last 500 meters. North Allegheny then lifted the cadence and began to even the race. Hawken responded by lifting the cadence and pulling away to win the race by 2.7 seconds. Click here for the full results.

Ben and Gabe’s win at the Midwest competition advances Hawken to the Scholastic National Championship regatta which will be held on May 24-25, in Camden, NJ.

Next weekend, Hawken will compete in the Midwest Club Championships in Cincinnati.  The top three boats advance to the US Rowing Junior Nationals.

Good luck, Ben and Gabe!
