Junior Named Grand Prize Winner at NEO Science & Engineering Fair

Hawken junior Aric Floyd was named Grand Prize winner at the 2013 Northeast Ohio Science and Engineering Fair held March 4-7 at John Carroll University, qualifying him for the International Science and Engineering Fair in Phoenix this May. This is the fifth consecutive year that Hawken has had a Grand Prize winner in the 60-year-old competition.

Aric’s work, “Synthesis of Phase-Controlled Iron Oxide Nanoparticles via Continuous, Atmospheric Pressure Microplasma” took a first place in Chemistry, and was one of four Grand Prize winners in the 600 student, 80 school competition. The four-day event allows students to set up their science fair displays, discuss their projects with competition judges, and compete for more than $20,000 in prizes. “One of the most rewarding aspects of the Northeastern Ohio Science and Engineering Fair is the opportunity for students to discuss their research with more than 250 professional scientists and engineers from the local area,” said Tonya Strong-Charles, John Carroll University’s communications director.

Hunter Moeller '13 took a first place in Physics. Hawken’s 12 competing students collectively won over $1500 in awards, including awards from the Cleveland Clinic Foundation’s Lerner Research Institute. Results are listed below.
