Entrepreneurship Students Earn Paid Internships

Hawken Entrepreneurs have completed a four-week project with local startup company BoxCast, an online live streaming product and service in the JumpStart portfolio.

BoxCast founder Gordon Daly asked three teams of students to "get out of the building" and figure out how to effectively market his services to public, private, parochial school channels. A fourth team, called the WildCard team, was asked to identify new markets for BoxCast. Students began by broadcasting Hawken basketball games to familiarize themselves with BoxCast. Senior Alec Kwait, who is not enrolled in the class, jumped on the opportunity to announce the Hawken/US game as it streamed, and more than 500 people logged in watched and listened to the game.

Next, students in the class began contacting athletic directors, development offices and booster clubs for day schools in the Cleveland metro area and boarding schools east of Ohio. Hawken Athletic Director Jim Doyle was instrumental in earning the students a spot at the Chagrin Valley Conference Athletic Directors' monthly meeting. Mr. Doyle made note of how professional the students were during their presentation.

After a month of work in the field, students presented their work to Gordon Daly. Said Daly of the presentations, "I knew the information [the students] would provide would be useful and of high quality. I knew I was going to gain valuable insights and feedback. What I didn’t know was that they were going to go as deep [as they did]. They told me things I needed to hear. The criticisms and recommendations were not easy to listen to at times. But I needed to hear what they had to say. I am grateful for the opportunity to work with Hawken students.”

BoxCast has recently received a second round of funding from JumpStart and has made available two coveted paid summer internships to students in the Entrepreneurship class. "All the other interns will be college students. Typically, we would never consider high school students, but I can't think of anyone who knows the product better than the Hawken students I've worked with this year. I'm excited to make this available to them," explained Daly.
