Speech and Debate Wins Three State Championships

Tim Perevozchikov '14 and Ron Lubarsky '14 were named state champions in Public Forum Debate at the Ohio High School Speech League Speech and Debate State Tournament held March 1-2 at Boardman and Canfield High Schools. Perevozchikov and Lubarsky were the number one seeds, and won 29 out of 30 tournament ballots.

Will Mascaro '14 was named state champion in Congressional Debate.

Overall, Hawken placed third in team sweepstakes and 23 Hawken students qualified for the tournament. Other Hawken students with noted tournament results:

• Aric Floyd '14 was a semi-finalist in Lincoln Douglas Debate
• Arthur Erlendsson '13 and Adam Wolf '13 and Marty Zhu '14 and Noah Geller '14 were honored as quarter finalists in Policy Debate
• Michael Gerace '16 placed fifth in Impromptu Speaking
• Megan Cerbin '14 and Larry Fulton '15 advanced, respectively, to the semi-final and final session of Congressional Debate
• The Public Forum Debate teams of Arman Raz '13 and Michael Meany '13 and Sid Ahuja '14 and Zach Kirsch '14 were honored as double octofinalists and octofinalists, respectively; and 
• Jack Weisman '15 was an octofinalist in Lincoln Douglas Debate. 

Over 900 students from over 80 state wide high schools participated in the competition which is the culminating event in the speech and debate tournament season.

In a separate competition on March 9, the following freshmen placed in The Novice State Speech and Debate Tournament :

• Isaac Jacobson - 1st place in Impromptu
• Matt Zhu - 3rd place in Lincoln Douglas debate
• Tobili Hatcher - 5th place in Impromptu
