Debaters Win Prestigious Tournaments as they Prepare for States

Hawken student debaters Tim Perevozchikov '14 and Ron Lubarsky '14 go into the upcoming March state competition with significant winter championships in Ohio and North Carolina tournaments.

At the 40th Annual Laird Lewis Invitational held January in Charlotte, NC, the team of Perevozchikov and Lubarsky were named Public Forum tournament champions. They won by defeating last year’s National Forensic League champions on a 3-2 decision. Perevozchikov-Lubarsky were also named champions of the Public Forum Challenge, an application only event with 16 of the top tournament Public Forum teams selected for competition.

In a two day state-wide tournament held at Sylvania High School, Perevozchikov and Lubarsky repeated as Public Forum champions.

The team ended the month competing in the Barkley Forum, a national invitational tournament held at Emory University in Atlanta, where they placed in the quarter-final round in Public Forum. Out of the 238 invited debaters from across the country, Perevozchikov received the 4th overall place speaker award and Lubarsky placed 5th.

Other Hawken debaters going into the March state tournament with impressive winter records are Aric Floyd '14, who placed second in Lincoln Douglas in the Sylvania competition and was a Laird Lewis Invitational quarter finalist; and Will Mascaro '14 of Shaker Heights who was champion of the Sylvania Congressional Debate competition, and took fourth place at the Barkley Forum and Laird Lewis.
