Debate Team Continues Winning Streak

The Hawken Speech and Debate team traveled to three tournaments in December.
  • Alison Jin '15 placed 3rd in Original Oratory at a tournament at Cuyahoga Valley Christian Academy.
  • At Stow High School, Megan Cerbin '14 placed 4th and Larry Fulton '15 placed 1st in Congressional Debate. Michael Meany '13 placed 2nd in Public Forum. The team of Marty Zhu '14 and Derrick Liu '16 and the team of Arthur Erlendsson '14 and Adam Wolf '13 were quarterfinalists in policy debate and qualified for the state tournament. Marty Zhu was top speaker in policy debate.
  • The debate teams also participated at the John Edie tournament sponsored by the Blake school in Minneapolis. At this tournament Aric Floyd '14 and Tim Perevozchikov '14 were 6-0 in prelims and seeded #1. They were octafinalists in the tournament.  Ron Lubarsky '14 and Zach Kirsch '14 were quarterfinalists.  Tim received a first place speaker award out of the 206 debaters in Public Forum debate. At the round robin following the tournament, Ron and Tim defeated University School in the semi-finals and faced last year's National Forensic League national champions in the final round.  They ended up placing second in an extremely close round losing a 11-10 decision to The Harker School in California.
In early January, nine members of the Hawken debate team participated in the 40th Annual Laird Lewis Invitational at Myers Park High School in Charlotte, NC. 
  • Will Mascaro '14 made it to the final session of Congressional Debate and placed 4th. 
  • Aric Floyd '14 was a quarter-finalist in Lincoln Douglas Debate. There were 126 teams in Public Forum Debate. All three of the Hawken teams made it to the top 32. 
  • Sid Ahuja '14 and Zach Kirsch '14 were double-octa finalists and Michael Meany '13 and Arman Raz '13 were octa-finalists. 
  • Tim Perevozchikov '14 and Ron Lubarsky '14 were tournament champions in Public Forum.  They defeated last year's National Forensic League national champions on a 3-2 decision.
On Sunday January 6, Tim and Ron also participated in the National Public Forum Challenge VI held at Myers Park High School.  This was an application only event with 16 of the top public forum teams in the nation selected. Tim and Ron emerged as champions of the Public Forum Challenge as well.
