Fall Intensives Underway
Upper School students are engaged in a wide variety of studies during this year's Fall Intensives. Made possible by Hawken's unique schedule, Upper School students take one course all day long for three consecutive weeks. Their coursework counts for one full semester credit. The cost of the courses, whether they are on the Gates Mills Campus, at the Gries Center, or taking trips to Cleveland, another state or another country, are built in to Hawken's tuition, ensuring that all students have access to a variety of engaging, hands-on learning experiences.
Classes this fall include Chemistry, French, Spanish, Cleveland in Action, Public Opinion in American Politics, Fashion Design, Physics, Environmental Studies Honors, Theater Production, Robotics, Game Theory, AP US History, Diversity, Creative Non-Fiction, Homeslessness and an array of innovative Humanities courses.

Dr. Pedro Escobar, Associate Professor of Surgery, and Director of Laparoscopy and Robotic Surgery at the Women's Health Institute of the Cleveland Clinic, devoted an entire morning to working with Hawken students. He provided an overview of the history and future directions in robotic surgery, complete with video of actual procedures and demonstrated how advances in miniaturization and in imaging have made it possible to be more accurate while performing surgery.
