Debate Team Wins Prestigious National Event
Eight Hawken students recently participated in the prestigious Bronx High School of Science 42nd annual New York City Invitational featuring competitors from across the U.S.
Hawken representation included three Public Forum Teams (Ron Lubarsky '14/Tim Perevozchikov '14, Sid Ahuja '14/Zach Kirsch '14, and Emily Hedlund '15/Arman Razmjouei '13), and Lincoln-Douglas debater Jack Weisman '15, and Student Congress debater Will Mascaro '14.
Both Lubarsky/Perevozchikov and Ahuja/Kirsch advanced with the top 32 teams to the break rounds. Lubarsky/Perevozchikov earned first place out of 123 teams in Public Forum. In addition, Ron Lubarsky was recognized as the 7th best speaker, and Tim Pervozchikov was named the top overall speaker out of 246 competitors. Will Mascaro was voted the top speaker in two of the preliminary rounds in Student Congress, and advanced to the championship round, where he earned 5th place overall for the tournament.
"This is the first time that Hawken has won a national debate tournament and I am extremely excited about their incredible accomplishment," says debate coach and science teacher Bob Shurtz. "I'm even more excited about Tim and Ron's success than I am when Michigan beats OSU!"
In addition to their impressive performance at the tournment, Ron and Tim were among 12 teams invited to the exclusive Bronx public forum round robin held the day before the main event and placed 2nd among the 6 teams in their pod. Tim was honored as the 2nd best speaker overall in the Round Robin.
