Hawken Joins Elite Global Online Academy

Hawken School is proud to announce its membership in the Global Online Academy, a not-for-profit consortium of elite, international independent schools with a mission to develop 21st century skills by replicating, in shared online classrooms, the intellectually rigorous programs and excellent teaching that are the hallmarks of its member schools.

Global Online Academy was founded when Lakeside School of Seattle invited 15 peer schools for a three day conference to discuss aspects of online learning and the enhanced range of learning possibilities that a peer partnership could provide to students and educators. The founding schools included Cranbrook Schools of Bloomfield Hills, Michigan; The Dalton School, NY, NY; King’s Academy, Madaba-Manja, Jordan; Sidwell Friends School, Washington, DC; Albuquerque Academy, Albuquerque, New Mexico; Catlin Gabel School, Portland, Oregon; Germantown Friends School, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania; Head-Royce School, Oakland, California; Lakeside School, Seattle, Washington; and Punahou School, Honolulu, Hawaii.

Hawken joins the Global Online Academy as the only school from Ohio. The consortium now includes 19 signature independent schools recognized for their academic excellence. Along with the before noted founding schools, consortium membership has expanded to include the International School of Beijing, Shunji, Beijing, China; Latin School of Chicago, Chicago, Illinois; Jakarta International School, Jakarta, Indonesia; The Blake School, Hopkins, Minnesota; Greenhill School, Dallas, Texas; Isidore Newman School, New Orleans, Louisiana; Noble and Greenough, Dedham, Massachusetts; and The Westminster Schools, Atlanta, Georgia.

“At this time we are in the process of exploring how membership in the Global Online Academy can best be implemented into our schedule and learning environment,” D. Scott Looney, Head of School, stated in the membership announcement to Hawken’s families, faculty and staff. “This will be a multi-year process, as we gain the information and ideas needed to utilize this partnership in a way that most enhances the Hawken tradition and learning experience.”

Additional information about the Global Online Academy, its mission, history and programs can be found at globalonlineacademy.org. The Global Online Academy was featured in a September 25 Wall Street Journal article, “Online Holdouts No More.”
