Track and Tennis Athletes Win State Championships

Congratulations Dan Lubarsky ’12 and Siddarth Ahuja ’14, OHSAA Division II Tennis Doubles State Champions! Dan and Sid outlasted the returning State Runners-up from Lima Central Catholic to claim Hawken’s first State Championship in Boys Tennis. It was an epic performance in the championship match for the Hawks with the match lasting more than two hours. The tennis team advanced to the OTCA State Team Region Championship match (State Final Eight) where they lost a close and highly contested match (3-2) to the eventual state champion. The Hawks were #9 in the final state coaches poll.
 
Alexandra “Ally” Markovich ’13 won the Division III 3,200m run at the OHSAA State Track Meet in Columbus with a school-record time of 11:04.53. Running a near-perfect race by staying with the front-runners and utilizing the pack on a windy day, Ally pulled away in the last 400 meters on her way to being crowned State Champion. She bested her own personal record by nearly six seconds. Zachary Polk ’14 also competed at the State Track meet, placing 13th in the D-II long jump.
 
In other spring sports news, Middle School track teams did well in the inaugural CVC invitational. With 18 schools present, the boys team took an astounding 2nd place finish. The girls finished an impressive 9th. Individual champions including Israel Moorer ’16 in the 400m, and Desmond Lawson ’16 in the high jump and the 4x200m relay.
 
Hawken baseball won three tournament games, advancing to the OHSAA District Championship game where they were defeated 6-3 by Grand Valley HS (28-1). The Hawks, who finished 18-11, also played for the CVC league championship, narrowly losing to Beachwood HS in 10 innings. The Hawks were led by Wagner recruit and CVC Metro MVP Nate Hunt, who batted .474 on the season and on the mound had a 1.48 ERA with 71 strikeouts. Nate was also named Mizuno All-Ohio.
 
Boys lacrosse finished their season 13-5, advancing to the Region Championship game (State Final Eight) where they lost to University School. John Rayburn ’12 was named 1st team All-Ohio; Jacob Gries ’12, Stephen Petersilge ’13, and Will Holden ’13 were named 2nd team, and Corey Steinberg ’12 was named Honorable Mention.
 
Girls lacrosse finished their season 12-7, also advancing to the Region Championship game where they fell to Chagrin Falls. Colleen Schikowski ’12 was named 1st Team All-Ohio. Seven players were named Academic All-Ohio – Molly Liebeskind ’12, Annie Artz ’13, Sydney Costantini ’13, Annie Schirm ’13, Colleen Schikowski ’12, Vanessa Bajko ’13, and Emily Leizman ’13.
