Induction Ceremony Recognizes Academic Excellence

The Hawken community gathered on April 26, 2012 to recognize and induct new members of the Cum Laude Society.

 

The Cum Laude Society recognizes academic achievement for the purpose of promoting excellence (Areté), justice (Diké) and honor (Timé) and allows for inducting 20% of the senior class, 10% of whom may become members in their junior year. A faculty selection committee evaluates students for “academic excellence, a passion for learning and the highest standards of educational ethics and school citizenship.”

 

The program began with a stirring rendition of Gabriel Fuare’s Piano Trio Op. 120 played by Arthur Erlendsson ’13 on piano, Gabe Napoli ’13 on violin, and Benjamin Franciso ’13 on cello. Click here to listen to their performance.

 

Following the performance Mr. Looney read the Cum Laude Society’s charge to new inductees: The distinguished record you have made at Hawken School has won you membership in the Cum Laude Society. This society is a fellowship of scholars whose purpose it is to recognize excellence in academic work. As you pursue your education it is our hope that you will accept the honor of membership in this society as a responsibility to make some contribution to the ongoing search for greater understanding of humans and society.

 

The ceremony then honored students inducted into the society last year, and welcomed 21 new students to the society, 11 seniors and 10 juniors.

Upper School English teacher Cris Harris gave an inspiring address to the audience of parents, student, faculty and administrators. An avid hiker and director of Hawken's Outdoor Leadership Program, Mr. Harris offered students advice as they follow their individual paths. Click here to listen to his address.
