Debaters Win at Tournaments

Three Hawken teams in public forum debate competed at the Stanford Invitational Speech & Debate Tournament against 141 teams from around the nation February 11-13. All three teams placed in the top 32 and therefore advanced to the elimination rounds.  Miles Bloomenkranz '12 and Ryan Looney '12 were double-octa finalists. Arman Raz '13 and Josh Petrack '12 were undefeated, 6-0, were 2nd seed in prelims, and won double-octa and octa rounds. They were matched against Ron Lubarsky '14 and Tim Perevozchikov '14 in the quarter final round and conceded to them so that Ron and Tim could get the TOC bid. Ron and Tim won the tournament as well as Kindles. This (along with their quarter-finalist finish at the Barkley Forum tournament at Emory University in Atlanta) qualifies them for the Tournament of Champions in May.

The North Coast District of the National Forensics League held their national qualifying tournament at St. Ignatius High School February 17-18. Ani Dasarathy '12 qualified for nationals in Lincoln Douglas Debate. The national tournament will he held June 10 - 15 in Indianapolis. He will also debate at the City Club at noon on Friday, March 9 and qualifies for the state tournament March 1 - 3 at Jackson High School. Tim Perevozchikov '14 and Ron Lubarsky '14 qualified for the national tournament in Public Forum Debate. Michael Meany '13 and Zach Kirsch '14 are first alternates to the national tournament in Public Forum Debate. This also qualifies them to the state tournament. In policy debate, Marty Zhu '14 and Arthur Erlensson '13 are fifth alternates to nationals and Adam Wolf '13 and Anthony Hsieh '12 are second alternates to nationals.
