Electric Junkyard Gamelan Enthralls Upper School Students

The upper school student body was recently treated to a performance by Terry Dame's Electric Junkyard Gamelan, an eclectic group of classically trained musicians who perform original compositions that fuse Indonesian traditional with contemporary elements including salsa and hip hop.  With a motto of "Reusue, Recycle, and Rock," the band makes music using Terry Dame's handcrafted instruments made from recycled materials like flowerpots, garbage cans, steel saw blades, and rubber bands and called such unique names as the clayrimba, the rhubarp and the sitello.

The band has performed at the Museum of Modern Art in New York City, The  Museum of Modern Art in Detroit, and at Cleveland's Ingenuity Festival. Thanks to Arts Department Chair Denise Buckley for inviting this group to Hawken!
