Power of the Pen Climax: Third in the State
Congratulations to coach Laura Staufer and our five state qualifiers for Power of the Pen: Alison Jin, Valerie Heyd, Anna Du, Sophie Kerman, and Elijah Spiro. The Hawken team earned third place in the state of Ohio this past weekend. In addition, Alison Jin won two \"Best of the Best\" personal writing awards. A third place team win is extraordinarily impressive, considering that over 7000 writers participated throughout the year all over the state and only 700 made it to the state championship. Alison, Valerie, Anna, and Elijah all made it to the power round, which is reserved for the top 50 writers in each grade level. Many outstanding independent and suburban public school systems in our area were also involved with Power of the Pen, and a couple of them performed well at the state competition, but Hawken was the only school from this group to achieve a top-three ranking.
