lvl
Members of Jim Newman`s Civil War senior elective had the opportunity to meet Pulitzer Prize winning journalist and author Tony Horwitz Monday evening April 12 at the Hudson Library. Horwitz, who is researching a new book on John Brown, discussed with students topics from his book Confederates in the Attic, which is used as a core text in the Civil War course. Students asked Horwitz questions about battlefield preservation issues, race relations in the South connected to the war, rebel flag symbolism, how the war is remembered in the North and the South, and his experiences reenacting the battles. After the lively discussion students listened to Horwitz address a larger group gathered in the Hudson library and then ennjoyed dinner in Hudson. As a thank you from the students, Horwitz was presented with a Hawken t-shirt, which he promised to wear proudly.
