Hawken Vets Saluted at School Meeting

lvl
After the following announcement was made at morning meeting this week, the entire Upper School community stood to applaud Hawken veterans Jim Baker, Peter Scott, and Teri Williams for their selfless courage and service to our country: At 11:00 a.m. on November 11th, 1918, Allied and German governments signed an armistice, or an agreement to stop fighting, signaling the end of World War I. Armistice Day, as Veteran`s Day was formerly known, became a legal holiday in 1938. The name was changed to Veterans` Day in 1954. This Wednesday is Veterans` Day, an opportunity for us to acknowledge the service and dedication of those individuals who have served in our armed forces. We are privileged at Hawken to have a number of such individuals among us. Jim Baker, head of our maintenance staff, served for 28 years in the United States Navy in both active and reserve capacities and retired with the rank of Senior Chief Petty Officer. Mr. Scott was in the United States Army from 1967 to 1970, retiring with the rank of Captain, and having served with distinction in Vietnam and Cambodia. Major Teri Williams continues to serve with the US Army Reserve, having been, over the last few years, deployed to combat zones in Iraq and Afghanistan. Please join us in thanking these dedicated soldiers and veterans of our armed forces for their service to our nation.
