CCC Donates Time and Labor to Food Bank

Deb Amantea and Linda Chaney
Several members of the Hawken faculty and staff recently donated a morning to volunteer at the Cleveland Foodbank, working to sort perishables and packing and carrying boxes. The work of the Hawken volunteers helps the clearinghouse manage and coordinate its efforts to feed the hungry. \"Volunteers are crucial to the operation of the Foodbank,\" the organization`s Web site says. \"Without volunteers, it would not be possible to collect, sort and repack all the food that comes through our warehouse every day.\" Just last year, the Foodbank distributed over 20 million pounds of food to more than 450 hunger programs, enough to serve over 15 million meals to hungry individuals in the area. The day of volunteering was hosted by Hawken`s Cultivating Community Committee, a group that works to build collegiality between the campuses and divisions. \"The service project at the Food Bank did just that,\" said Linda Chaney. \"We were fortunate this year to get both faculty and staff to participate, which has been a goal of the committee.\" Those who particpated were Dave Solema, Bridget Rinehimer, Pam O`Brien, Steve Newcomer, Brian Lennon, Gail Holtz, Deb Hopkins, Martha Doran, Andrew Cleminshaw and Linda Chaney.
