Lower School Students Perform at Winter Recital

lvl
Hawken`s Lower School Winter Music Recital was held in the Lower School Chapel just prior to winter break and featured 27 Lower School Students performing solo on piano, clarinet, saxophone, and flute. The program was proudly presented by Shanelle Cook`s and Bridge Rinehimer`s Piano and Woodwind Studio. For many students, this was their first time performing. While some students played traditional holiday music, pieces ranged from Bach to Boogie Woogie. After the recital, students and their friends, families and teacher gathered for a post-recital reception, enabling the previously nervous performers to relax and eat cookies and drink cider. Studies show that learning to play an instrument contributes to brain development - particularly the areas of the brain that are involved in language and reasoning and learning to think creatively and problem solve. It also helps them learn about other cultures, teaching empathy. In addition, they learn the value of sustained effort to achieve excellence and the rewards of hard work. The study of art breeds empathy (emotion?) It can also enhance self-esteem, which can enhance both a child`s social and academic life. Music Lessons are offered through the Passport Program and are scheduled after school. If your child is interested in lessons, please contact Bridge Rinehime at brine@hawken.edu. Currently students in the Passport Program are studying instruments in the brass, woodwind, percussion, and string families, and voice lessons will be available soon as well.
