Join `The Race` to benefit cancer

The Berns family - Josh `10, Dani `12, Patti and Jonathan - invites you to celebrate your mothers, grandmothers, aunts, and all the women you love this Mother`s Day. Run or walk in The Race at Legacy Village on May 13, 2007 to raise money to fight breast cancer. Funds will benefit breast cancer research and education at the Cleveland Clinic Taussig Cancer Center. The Berns family founded the event 3 years ago when Josh, a current ninth grader, came up with the idea. "Life has been good to me, and I realized that it was time to help others," explains Josh. "Too many of my friends` parents and my own relatives have had cancer. With one out of every eight women affected by breast cancer, I decided that would be a good cause to work for." With the assistance of his family and friends, Josh`s idea turned to reality, and to date, the yearly event has raised $150,000 toward the cancer fight. In an ironic twist of fate, Patti, was diagnosed with breast cancer soon after the 2005 race. The 2006 run/walk was a celebration of her recovery. "An important message of the run is for women to be vigilant about their health and have yearly mammograms," says Patti. "I am a survivor because of early detection. My cancer was discovered on a routine mammogram. If this run convinces just one woman who does not currently know she has breast cancer to get a mammogram, then it will be a success, no matter how much money we raise." Last year approximately 1000 people participated in the fundraiser. On the day of the race, there will be food, activities, and entertainment. Prizes will be given to the individual who raises the most funds, and to the school with the best participation - so be sure to specify Hawken School when you register.
