Hawks Rally for Relay for Life

With a turnout of over 80 people, the Hawken Hawks raised $23,000 for the American Cancer Society on May 19 & 20, which netted them with three trophies; Biggest Division 1 team, most money raised online, and most money raised overall. Hawken was also recognized as a Diamond Donor. The American Cancer Society`s Relay For Life is an annual fun-filled overnight activity to raise money for the Cancer Society. As the teams run the relay, they remember those who lost their lives to cancer and celebrate cancer survivors. In the 2005 Relay, the team almost reached their goal when they raised close to $50,000 for cancer research. Nearly 100 members of the Hawken community made it out to the event. For this year`s race, four juniors took over the reigns. Catherine Schirm, Erin Steinberg, Stephanie Brueck and Grace Dickman worked hard to sell candy bars, t-shirts, get corporate sponsorship, and to motivate their classmates to reach their goal of $50,000. They made multiple trips to the middle school to try and get those students involved as well. For Hawken School, the fundraiser was truly a community effort. At least one member of the Hawken team was walking or running around the track at all times. Hawken parents supported the students with supplies and refreshments for the overnight relay. Cancer survivors from the Hawken community joined others in a Survivors` lap around the track. This year, for the first time, Hawken Middle School students participated alongside Upper School students as family and friends cheer from the sidelines.
