Women Swimmers in Spotlight Again

The Plain Dealer rounded out their Winter Sports coverage with a season all-star feature last week. Four of the ten honored female swimmers were from Hawken. Brittany Strumbel `08 Event: 200 freestyle Superstar stats: She won the Division II state championship in the 200 freestyle and placed second in the 500 freestyle. She swam on 200 and 400 freestyle relays that won state championships. What you didn`t know: Strumbel played soccer for the North Royalton Bears travel team, including the 11-12 age group team that won a national indoor championship in 2002. Jennifer Aronoff `08 Event: 200 individual medley Superstar stats: She placed third at the Division II state meet in the individual medley and was fourth in the breaststroke. She swam on 200 and 400 freestyle relays that won state championships. What you didn`t know: Aronoff was the first American swimmer to win a medal at the International Children`s Games, winning one in Cleveland in 2004 and three in Coventry, England, in 2005. Sarah Dorenkott `06 Event: 100 freestyle Superstar stats: She led the Hawks to the Division II state team title, placing first in the 100 and 50 freestyles. She anchored winning medley and 200 freestyle relays, boosting her career first-place state finishes to 12. What you didn`t know: Dorenkott has a four-pound, black Miniature Yorkie named Teddy and a 160-pound, white Great Pyrenees named Posha. Brittany Legal `06 Event: 500 freestyle Superstar stats: She placed third at the Division II state meet in the 500 freestyle and fourth in the 200 freestyle. What you didn`t know: Legal was born in Niagara Falls, Canada, and lived in Texas and Florida before moving with her family to Chagrin Falls prior to her junior year.
