Students Appear on Channel One Network

On April 21, Hawken School sophomores Evin McMullen, Angela Primbas and Amanda Weatherhead and their Save Our Stream (S.O.S.) project will be featured on the nationwide Channel One Network. The Peabody Award-winning Channel One News and its three-time Webby Award-winning Web site feature breaking news and in-depth issues affecting the world and American teenagers. The 12-minute news broadcasts are delivered daily to more than seven million teens in middle schools and high schools across the country--meaning nearly 30 percent of teenagers in the United States will view the program! Channel One anchor Rich DeMuro and producer Todd Brown traveled from Los Angeles to the Cleveland suburbs last summer to interview and film McMullen, Primbas and Weatherhead. They visited a fish hatchery; The West Woods in Russell Township, where McMullen, Primbas and Weatherhead held an educational session with local families; and Spring Brook, a stream in Munson Township. During the interview, the three Hawken students discussed how their interest in S.O.S. began; why they developed the project; and the importance of volunteering. They also spoke about the fragile existence of the Ohio brook trout; threats to the watershed; operating a fish hatchery; and what actions residents can take to reduce pollution runoff into area waterways. Following its airtime on April 21, the S.O.S. news clip will be posted on the Channel One website for one month. More information on S.O.S can also be found at saveourstream.org.
