Upcoming Retrospective on Joe Motto, First Art Teacher at Hawken

unknown
Hawken`s first art teacher, \"Cleveland School\" sculptor and ceramicist Joe Motto (1891 - 1965), will be the subject of a retrospective exhibition sponsored by the Cleveland Artists Foundation and entitled Joseph Motto: A Jazz Age Journey from Cleveland to Florence, from July 8 - September 10, 2005. Mr. Motto served on the faculty from Hawken`s founding in 1915 until 1928. Several of his works can be found on the Lyndhurst campus, including the fountain sculpture of Pan on the library courtyard, and a small figure of a piping faun, crouching in the vines outside of the preschool entrance. The exhibit will feature approximately sixty three-dimensional works -- including a cast of the pitching arm of former Cleveland Indians` star pitcher, Bob Feller -- borrowed from collectors around the country, plus photographs, text and graphics. A catalogue is available for sale. The exhibit is co-sponsored by the Center for Sacred Landmarks at the Maxine Goodman Levine College of Urban Affairs at Cleveland State University and by The Cleveland Institute of Art. The Opening Reception is scheduled for Friday, July 8, 7:00-9:00pm. Opening remarks will be presented by exhibit curator Richard Karberg, retired Professor of Photography in the Art Department of Cuyahoga Community College. Mr. Karberg will be followed by Cleveland Institute of Art President David Deming , who will deliver a talk on Cleveland sculpture entitled \"A Fellow Sculptor`s Insight.\" The Cleveland Artists Foundation is located at 17801 Detroit Avenue.
