Latin Students Earn Top Marks on National Exams

Hawken 8th Graders Samuel M. and Jacob S. recently earned 39/40, or Summa Cum Laude, on the National Latin Exam, and John B. earned a Cum Laude award. The exam requires students to answer forty questions on topics ranging from history and mythology to Latin grammar and Latin reading comprehension. The exam was administered to 135,000 students, from all 50 states and 14 countries. Samuel M. also scored 100% on the National Mythology Exam, for which he received the Athena Gold Award of Excellence. 6th Grader Mitchell J. received 100% on Core literary subjects, while the Bronze Award, for scores between 90%-95%, was earned by Jocelyn A. (6th Grade), Joseph M., Spencer H. (7th Grade) and John B. (8th Grade). Students were tested for their knowledge of general mythology and the underworld; the test also focused on the The Iliad, The Odyssey, and The Aeneid.
