Speech and Debate Team Advances to State and National Tournament

Hawken School Speech and Debate students participated in the Ohio High School Speech League Cleveland District Tournament on February 4-5, 2005, at Vermilion High School. Sarah B. was the district champion in Lincoln Douglas debate. Overall, Hawken placed second in team sweepstakes out of 22 schools at the district tournament. Hawken also qualified 18 students for the state tournament. Members of the Hawken School Speech and Debate Team also competed at the North Coast National Forensic League District Tournament on February 18-19 at St. Ignatius High School. Three Hawken students qualified for the national tournament that will be held June 12-17 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Sarah B. and Michael J. are national qualifiers in Lincoln Douglas debate. Michael B. is a national qualifier in International Extemporaneous Speaking. Hawken School also won the John Haight Award for the strongest Lincoln Douglas debate team.
