Twenty Hawken fifth-grade students competed as a team in the 2005 Science Olympiad held at Cleveland State University in March. The Olympiad is a team event for local elementary schools that promotes the fun and excitement of science. The Hawken team finished first out of 24 participating schools in two events. Students also earned numerous ribbons for second-, third-, and fourth-place finishes. In addition, the Hawken Lower School Science Olympiad team was among seven schools recognized for displaying a high level of sportsmanship during the event. In preparation for the Olympiad, Hawken students studied a wide range of topics including bird identification, bridge building, laser light reflection and mystery powders chemistry.
