New York Times Columnist Entertains While Talking Tech

It was David Pogue’s birthday when he visited Hawken March 9, but it was upper school students and faculty who were treated to a surprise. Kennedy Auditorium was transformed into a veritable comedy club as the personal-technology columnist for The New York Times demonstrated features of cutting edge phone and internet technology.
Pogue is not your run-of-the-mill tech guru. Extroverted and witty (and a summa cum laude graduate of Yale to boot), he majored in music, English, and computer science before entering the Broadway scene, where he wrote and produced shows for nearly a decade. He has also authored numerous how-to books and is an Emmy award-winning tech correspondent for CBS News.

Economic realities combined with a passion for technology eventually steered Pogue away from Broadway and towards technology, but the irrepressible entertainer in him continues to find an outlet through numerous speaking engagements across the country. In addition to writing the weekly tech column for the New York Times, Pogue has a website, and a daily blog.

A significant portion of Pogue’s job involves testing and reviewing new tech devices before they become available to the general public – and he has fun doing it. He shared with the Hawken audience numerous tips and tricks for convenient (and free) access to all kinds of information as well as customizable, user-friendly cell phone features – both existing capabilities and a re-born version of "Grand Central" by Google, which Pogue announced in this week’s column, posted on Thursday.

To conclude his presentation, Pogue showed his famous YouTube video “I Want an iPhone” and performed two additional song parodies on Hawken's grand piano. The audience, grateful for the helpful tips and the laughter, thanked him with a standing ovation.
