Birchwood Writer Awarded National Silver Medal
The Alliance for Young Writers & Artists delivered exciting news to Birchwood eighth grader, Qiwen Wu, that she is a national medalist. Her short story “Because of You,” received a gold key Scholastic Art & Writing award at the regional level. At the national level the story was awarded a Silver Medal.
The Alliance for Young Artists & Writers identifies teens with exceptional artistic and literary
talent and brings their remarkable work to a national audience through their Scholastic Awards,
providing recognition, exhibition, publication opportunities, and scholarships. Students in grades
seven through twelve can apply in 28 categories, and Birchwood is proud to be represented
among the initial 319,000 submissions.

carving out imaginative scenes then meticulously choosing corresponding words with great
care.”
