Stirn Hall Beam Raising Lifts Steel and Spirits

Against a backdrop of clear blue November sky, Stirn Hall’s final beam was lifted from the ground of the construction site at Hawken’s Upper School earlier today.

Special guests included Kelvin and Eleanor Smith Foundation President Ellen Stirn Mavec ‘76, Hawken Board Chair Charlie Cooley, and Jonathan Kurtz, head architect at Westlake Reed Leskosky. Joined by Head of School Scott Looney, the honored guests donned hardhats as they approached the beam so that Ellen and Charlie could add the final signatures to the several hundred penned by students, faculty and staff last week.

Spirits soared and cheers rang out from the Upper School student body when the beam began to rise, gracefully and seemingly effortlessly, as the attached Hawken and American flags waved in the wind. The beam was then lowered and secured in its permanent home in the soon-to-be enclosed walking bridge that will join Stirn Hall’s main academic building to the new science wing.

It was indeed an uplifting moment for Upper School students, faculty, staff, and specials guests, who by their presence and signatures will forever remain a part of this proud moment in our school’s history.
