Senior’s Work Published on Huffington Post Site

Kareem Danan ’17 never imagined that he would become a published author. But real world experiences gained through his Hawken journalism class changed that perception.
As part of an assignment for the elective course, Danan chose to attend a local AA meeting. The power of that first-hand experience set off what he described as “a flurry of emotions I have never felt all at the same time before,” challenging preconceived notions about alcoholism and its victims – a revelation that he felt compelled to share through his writing.

Danan acknowledges that without the guidance and encouragement of his journalism teacher and mentor Terry Dubow, he “never would’ve even thought about trying to get this piece published, let alone written in the first place.” But having the opportunity to view humanity through a different lens and to share his reflections with his teacher and classmates gave him the motivation and desire to share his story with a wider audience. And The Huffington Post was happy to oblige.

For Danan, the project that may initially have seemed like another assignment to check off his list unexpectedly transformed him, touching his heart and mind in ways that will not be soon forgotten.
