First Graders Explore University Circle

First graders recently returned to the Lyndhurst campus after a week-long unit based at the Gries Center, where they immersed themselves in studying the five senses.

Making multi-sensory observations and using inquiry strategies to learn about the University Circle community, students considered questions such as: What can we directly observe with our senses?  What does this tell us?  How can we combine sensory information to learn more about our environment, to add to our knowledge base?

Highlights of the week were an exploration walk, work with Chef Lyons and Dee Jay Doc, a visit to Botanical Gardens, and a sculpture walk with Mrs. Joyce. Students had many opportunities to share their observations and experiences with their peers through music and rhythm, poetry, writing, drawing, photography, and building. Project-based learning activities included a city sounds scavenger hunt, sense observation poems to include in their class mural, creating an original class rap, and constructing original foilboard sculptures.
