Ki Allen and David Kay to Perform with Hawken Jazz Band

As part of its Artist in Residence program, Hawken School is proud to announce a special artistic collaboration with two of Cleveland’s top jazz artists, Ki Allen and David Kay.
From April 5-16, the musicians will engage with members of Hawken’s Jazz Band as part of the school’s jazz curriculum, which focuses on expanding students’ performance-based music skills. Their visit will culminate in a performance with the Hawken Jazz Band on Saturday, April 16 at 7 p.m. in Kennedy Auditorium on Hawken’s Gates Mills campus.

One of the best vocalists in the region, Ki Allen’s style ranges from jazz and blues to pop and rock. She has performed at The Bop Stop, Nighttown, BLU Jazz+, Tri-C JazzFest, Walsh College, Cain Park, The Jazz Heritage Orchestra and the Hanna Theater. She currently performs weekly with The Skatch Andersen Orchestra and occasionally performs with the Fat Tuesday Big Band.

David Kay, a renowned saxophonist and highly regarded jazz educator, has performed with players in the New Tonight Show band and the Saturday Night Live band. He has performed in concert with Aretha Franklin, Mel Torme, The Temptations, Lou Rawls, and The Four Tops, among others. Kay has also been on the faculty of several local and regional schools and colleges, is on the faculty at the world-renowned Interlochen Arts Camp, and is a member of the Jazz Heritage Orchestra.

Hawken’s Artist in Residence Program is in its third year, and previous visiting artists include Michael Henderson, Harry Bacharach and Kenny Davis. Hawken parents and alumni Meredith and Michael Weil have generously provided seed money to establish the Sam and Josh Weil Hawken Jazz Band Endowment in honor of their sons, Sam ’13 and Josh ’15, both of whom played in Hawken’s jazz band. Many current and former Hawken Jazz Band families have added their support to this worthwhile endeavor, and with some additional support from community members, the Annual Artist-in-Residence Program and Hawken Jazz Fest Concert will become permanently endowed.

Tickets to the April 16 performance are available to the public ($10 for adults and $5 for students) and can be purchased online at www.hawken.edu/jazzTickets can also be purchased the night of the performance.
